## One line

Motive Engine is an explainable Utility AI decision layer that ranks authored motives and returns response keys for existing game systems.

## Short description

Motive Engine by PrettyNerdee is an explainable Utility AI decision layer for games and interactive systems. Developers author motives, feed in live context and traits, and inspect ranked alternatives and the selected response key. Existing game systems execute the result. The Unity package includes Decision Labs and a live debugger for inspecting decisions.

## Standard description

Motive Engine is an explainable Utility AI decision layer by PrettyNerdee. Developers define what an agent or system cares about through authored motives, context weights and traits. Motive evaluates those inputs, ranks competing motives, and returns the selected intent, a response key and an explanation of the decision. The host game decides what that response means and executes it through existing controllers, dialogue, behaviour graphs or custom code.

The Unity package includes ScriptableObject configuration, JSON import/export, four Decision Labs, a live Motive Debugger and optional execution-bridge examples. It suits decisions involving competing pressures in NPC, faction and narrative systems. Motive keeps scoring inspectable without taking ownership of movement, pathfinding, animation or the rest of the game's AI architecture.

## Technical description

Motive Engine is an explainable Utility AI decision layer that separates intent evaluation from behaviour execution. A configuration defines agents, numeric context signals, motives, response mappings and optional scenario presets. At evaluation time, authored weights and per-agent traits affect motive scores. The result exposes the selected motive, response key, score, ranked alternatives and structured explanation data, including contributors, trait effects and the runner-up gap.

In Unity, developers author a MotiveConfigAsset, provide live values through a context provider, and evaluate agents through the runtime API or a MotiveAgent component. MotiveResponseRouter maps response keys to UnityEvents. Optional sample bridges illustrate routing into NavMesh, Unity Behavior or Behavior Designer; those host systems remain responsible for execution and have their own requirements.

Four Decision Labs cover tactical combat, horror, faction pressure and narrative intent. The Motive Debugger provides live inspection and recorded decision history. Included AI Skills are instruction files for coding assistants integrating or debugging the package; the decision runtime does not depend on an LLM. The repository also contains JavaScript and Unreal implementations. Motive is designed to compose with existing gameplay systems rather than supply a complete character controller, navigation system or behaviour framework.
